Viaggio di nozze in cina: 5 giugno, Xi'an/Honeymoon in China: 5th of June, Xi'an

Today is our last day in Xi'an and we have a very busy program, as there are still many monuments to see.
The first is also the most famous of the city, the Great Wild Goose Pagoda (there is also a Small Wild Goose Pagoda we did not visit). Under the Tang dynasty, to which dates back its old-fashioned square architecture, it was part of the city walls. It was completed in 652 to host the Buddhist sutras brought back from India by monk Xuan Zang, the famous author of "Journey to the West".
We arrive in the modern and well-kept park that houses the pagoda. Today it rains again, but the park is still crowded with people armed with umbrellas.
We enter the Buddhist complex of which the pagoda is part (200 CNY). In the various halls the monk Xuan Zan is depicted as if he were a mythological figure. Although it's interesting and aesthetically very elaborate it's definitely too modern for my taste.
We continue with the Pagoda (60 CNY). I'm almost disappointed, because inside there is really little to see. The views that can be seen from the windows however, especially from the seventh and last floor, are spectacular. We also manage to see from above a fountain show in the park avoiding the crowd.

For lunch, we return to the Bell Tower and the Drum Tower area. We are looking for a dumpling restaurant recommended by Lonely Planet, we do not find it and we end up eating at Muslim Yang Dumpling Restaurant in Zhi Ba Shi Road, a small restaurant serving noodles and various dumplings, all halal, prepared in the open kitchen. We choose the mutton and shrimp dumplings, to share. The normal portion is of 15 pieces. They are fabulous. To accompany them we are served black vinegar and a spicy sauce. I drink a very good pomegranate juice, the Hairy Half a soft drink. We spend a total of 81 CNY.

In the afternoon we visit Guǎngrén Temple, the only Tibetan Buddhist temple of the province. Although it dates back to the eighteenth century, it was largely reconstructed in the twentieth century. In spite of this, it seems much more "authentic" than this morning's temple, there is an almost magical atmosphere.
The temple is decorated with colorful Tibetan flags and, as usual, consists of pavilions around a series of courtyards. We find various treasures: a brick spirit wall, the Altar of the Permanent Lamp, the Thousand Buddha Hall, an ancient Bodhi tree, a rare golden representation of Sakyamuni, resting on a pedestal of the Tang dynasty. But we are particularly striken the glimpse of the library (inaccessible to the public) in the last room, just visible behind the golden statues.

We're late again, and again we decide to eat at a mall once again. We choose a Japanese restaurant (Tokyo) with a really nice interior decor, with pop decorations everywhere, plushies as cushions and retro posters on the walls. There is no English menu, so are showed pictures of the dishes on a pad. We eat two types of rolls, one with eel and one with a weird hairy and fishy thing, and a salad with salmon tartar. They're pretty good, but we're still hungry. Our table neighbors have a beautiful fried shrimp roll that is not on the photo menu. We try to say "tempura maki", but the waitress does not understand. I make a drawing on the back of the receipt, then we point at the dish. And with our utmost embarrassment, the waitress goes to photograph the roll of our neighbors, a couple on a romantic date, to ask for confirm!
And with this bizarre episode our stay in Xi'an ends, tomorrow we will leave for Shanghai.
