A volte ritorno/The Second Coming (John Niven)

"The Second Coming" is a 2011 book by the Scottish writer John Niven.
It is a novel that wants to make social criticism through a funny modern version of Jesus Christ's story as told by the Gospels.
This is the plot: God, in High Renaissance, seeing that on Earth all is going well, goes on vacation for a week, which corresponds to five centuries in our world. When he returns to the office he realizes that while he was away everything degenerated: genocide, pollution, pedophile priests... God is really, really angry. His dilemma is whether to destroy everything or to send us again his son, the long haired dope lover Jesus, and ultimately he decides for the latter option, though Jesus, seen the results of the first time, is not very convinced. The poor man is reborn in the United States and tries to help the disadvantaged, marginalized and losers. In an attempt to get his message to the world (that is to be kind with each other), he ends up competing in a musical talent show.
The kind of humor of the book reminds a bit of "Life of Brian" by Monty Pythons. The result is nice, especially the characters (in particular Jesus) are very human and the irony works. But the book has a big defect: Niven criticize as he knows the absolute truth, and is morally superior to his readers, which is rather annoying, even if you share his ideas (and I suppose much worst otherwise). I also found the fact that Jesus and his daddy smoke and drank all the time (also swearing!) was a bit forced, with the intention of shocking the readers.
In the end, however, I promote it, also because I have a soft spot for the use of religious narratives in contexts other than traditional ones (for example I adore religious science fiction). It is a novel that manages to talk about interesting social ideas in a brilliant, never boring way.
Avoid it if you are a Christians rightist.
